Choosing the right frame

We suggest you choose your frame first. There are a few points to consider:

  • Do not overwhelm the image with the frame. You want the viewer to notice the art first. The framing is there to compliment the art, not compete with it.
  • Consider the style of the artwork and the design of the space it will be placed in A modern piece in an open airy space will do best with a minimal frame.
  • Consider the colors in your art and in your space. Warm colors will do best with brown and gold mouldings Cool colors will do best with brown and silver mouldings. Black mouldings work well in almost any setting.
  • You do not need to match your frames to your furniture finishes. You want to do what works best for the art. However, many times, we can select mouldings that will match your furniture finish. If you do not see a frame that will work for you, let us know and we'll pull additional frame selections.
  • If you have a lot of dark wood furniture in your room, try lightning up the art with a metal moulding or a contrasting wood color. Try mixing espresso furniture with silver accents with a Florentine metal moulding or a Satin Silver wood moulding or mix mahogany furniture with bronze frames.
  • Pieces larger than 32x40 will do best in a 2" or larger frame or a deep frame for support.
  • Canvas Art looks great in "Float Frames".
  • Pieces next to each other should have the same frame. If they are going in the same area, but not next to one another, we suggest similar frames but you do not have to put all the art in the same frame. If you are not sure where you want to install each piece or plan to rotate the art, using similar or same frames will make this process easier.

If you are finding it difficult to choose the right frame, just call us. We have been doing this for over 30 years and can make this step easy and fun!

Choosing the right mat

After you choose your frame, it is time to choose your mats. There are a few points to consider:

  • The mats are there to enhance the art, not to compete with it.
  • If you are double matting your art, the outside mat is typically 3" and the inner mat is 1/4".
  • If you would like larger or smaller mats, or would like to bottom weight your piece, (larger mat on the bottom), just let us know.
  • Your wall color will affect your outside mat selection. Neutral mats will work for most art. On art with warm colors, use off white or cream mats. On art with cool colors, use off white or grey mats.
  • If you want to use a color mat, select a mat color that will enhance the art and work well with your wall color. White, cream or off white mats work well on color walls.
  • Your inside mat normally matches the predominant color in your art.
  • If you cannot find a good inside color, try double matting your outside mat color over your inside mat color.
  • There are no mats on canvas art.
  • If a piece does not offer a mat option, it is too large to mat. In some cases, we can crop the piece so that matting is possible.
